In 1962, CBS hit a ratings gusher with The Beverly Hillbillies, a rustic sitcom about a poor mountaineer turned oil baron who relocates, along with his eccentric clan, to 'the Hill of Beverly.' Moving into a Beverly Hills mansion, the Clampett's retain their woodsy, hillbilly life-style, which is hilariously at odds with their newfound status among their wealthy neighbors. In their simplicity and humanity, it is often the seemingly out of touch Clampett's that get it right, while their neighbors are shown up as shallow, shielded and truly out of touch. Jed (Buddy Ebsen) is the patriarch of the clan, sensible if somewhat adrift from reality. Granny (Irene Ryan), who still makes her own soap in the mansion, is constantly on the look-out for a suitable husband for the beautiful but naïve Elly May (Donna Douglas). Jethro is Jed's slightly stupid but lovable nephew, who foolishly prides himself on his 6th grade education and fancies himself a ladies man, with comical results.
