Six year-old Hector is the youngest member of a loving and eccentric foster family. His best friend is a giant, scaly, imaginary creature he calls his "bunyip." A misunderstanding prompts the child welfare agency to put Hector into an orphanage. But before the agency can act, Hector disappears - apparently kidnapped by his bunyip.
